    Formation of hot tear under controlled solidification conditions

    Aluminum alloy 7050 is known for its superior mechanical properties, and thus finds its application in aerospace industry. Vertical direct-chill (DC) casting process is typically employed for producing such an alloy. Despite its advantages, AA7050 is considered as a "hard-to-cast" alloy because of its propensity to cold cracking. This type of cracks occurs catastrophically and is difficult to predict. Previous research suggested that such a crack could be initiated by undeveloped hot tears (microscopic hot tear) formed during the DC casting process if they reach a certain critical size. However, validation of such a hypothesis has not been done yet. Therefore, a method to produce a hot tear with a controlled size is needed as part of the verification studies. In the current study, we demonstrate a method that has a potential to control the size of the created hot tear in a small-scale solidification process. We found that by changing two variables, cooling rate and displacement compensation rate, the size of the hot tear during solidification can be modified in a controlled way. An X-ray microtomography characterization technique is utilized to quantify the created hot tear. We suggest that feeding and strain rate during DC casting are more important compared with the exerted force on the sample for the formation of a hot tear. In addition, we show that there are four different domains of hot-tear development in the explored experimental window-compression, microscopic hot tear, macroscopic hot tear, and failure. The samples produced in the current study will be used for subsequent experiments that simulate cold-cracking conditions to confirm the earlier proposed model.This research was carried out within the Materials innovation institute (www.m2i.nl) research framework, project no.     Development Of Al-B-C Master Alloy Under External Fields

    This study investigates the application of external fields in the development of an Al-B-C alloy, with the aim of synthesizing in situ Al3BC particles. A combination of ultrasonic cavitation and distributive mixing was applied for uniform dispersion of insoluble graphite particles in the Al melt, improving their wettability and its subsequent incorporation into the Al matrix. Lower operating temperatures facilitated the reduction in the amount of large clusters of reaction phases, with Al3BC being identified as the main phase in XRD analysis. The distribution of Al3BC particles was quantitatively evaluated. Grain refinement experiments reveal that Al-B-C alloy can act as a master alloy for Al-4Cu and AZ91D alloys, with average grain size reduction around 50% each at 1wt%Al-1.5B-2C additions

    Multiscale interactions of liquid, bubbles and solid phases in ultrasonic fields revealed by multiphysics modelling and ultrafast X-ray imaging

    The volume of fluid (VOF) and continuous surface force (CSF) methods were used to develop a bubble dynamics model for the simulation of bubble oscillation and implosion dynamics under ultrasound. The model was calibrated and validated by the X-ray image data acquired by ultrafast synchrotron X-ray. Coupled bubble interactions with bulk graphite and freely moving particles were also simulated based on the validated model. Simulation and experiments quantified the surface instability developed along the bubble surface under the influence of ultrasound pressure fields. Once the surface instability exceeds a certain amplitude, bubble implosion occurs, creating shock waves and highly deformed, irregular gas-liquid boundaries and smaller bubble fragments. Bubble implosion can produce cyclic impulsive stresses sufficient enough to cause µs fatigue exfoliation of graphite layers. Bubble-particle interaction simulations reveal the underlying mechanisms for efficient particle dispersion or particle wrapping which are all strongly related to the oscillation dynamics of the bubbles and the particle surface properties

    Linear Contraction Behavior of Low-Carbon, Low-Alloy Steels During and After Solidification Using Real-Time Measurements

    A technique for measuring the linear contraction during and after solidification of low-alloy steel was developed and used for examination of two commercial low-carbon and low-alloy steel grades. The effects of several experimental parameters on the contraction were studied. The solidification contraction behavior was described using the concept of rigidity in a solidifying alloy, evolution of the solid fraction, and the microstructure development during solidification. A correlation between the linear contraction properties in the solidification range and the hot crack susceptibility was proposed and used for the estimation of hot cracking susceptibility for two studied alloys and verified with the real casting practice. The technique allows estimation of the contraction coefficient of commercial steels in a wide range of temperatures and could be helpful for computer simulation and process optimization during continuous casting. © 2013 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International

    Effects of green solvents and surfactants on the characteristics of few-layer graphene produced by dual-frequency ultrasonic liquid phase exfoliation technique

    Nowadays, one of the promising methods for scalable graphene production is ultrasound-aided liquid phase exfoliation (ULPE) of graphite. Two current limiting factors of ULPE are the use of harmful solutions (such as N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone or Dimethylformamide) and a relatively low graphene yield. In this study, we demonstrate a new dual frequency (20 kHz and 1174 kHz) ULPE approach in various eco-friendly media, which enabled us to produce various few-layer graphene (FLG) solutions of high quality. By implementing sophisticated characterisation techniques consisting of Raman spectroscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy, the final graphene flakes structure was confirmed to correlate the properties of each individual solution. The thinner (∼3 layers) and larger (∼1.5 μm2) flakes were observed while using just water, with the highest yield (11%) of smaller FLG flakes to be achieved in the mixture of water and a surfactant. In order to understand the cavitation mechanism in different solutions, the ULPE process was investigated by acoustic measurements. This study demonstrates the crucial role of ethanol (as a solvent) and surfactants as it regulates the cavitation power and intensity of the ultrasonic field and, thereby, the cavitation effectiveness. It is suggested that the mixture of water, ethanol and a surfactant is the best medium for ULPE process where a high yield of low-defective FLG flakes can be obtained in a solution stable at least for 3 months (around 80%)
